Sky Lounge: A Fusion of Art, Architecture, and Sustainability

Ketan Jawdekar's Award-Winning Design Marries Local Heritage and Green Innovation

In the heart of India's textile hub, Kolhapur, a unique restaurant and bar has emerged, showcasing a blend of local culture, sustainable materials, and innovative design. The Sky Lounge, designed by Ketan Jawdekar, is a testament to the power of creativity and the potential of green design.

The Sky Lounge's most striking feature is its ceiling, adorned with 20,521 recycled paper tubes. This design choice is not merely aesthetic; it is a nod to Kolhapur's rich textile industry. The paper tubes, typically used for rolling fabric, form an organic pattern that oscillates with the wind, creating a dynamic and interactive ceiling display. This innovative use of sustainable materials has earned the Sky Lounge recognition as a truly green design.

The restaurant's design is not just about sustainability; it's also about creating a unique dining experience. The space is divided into different sections, each offering a different ambiance. From the open pizza counter to the sun deck, the enclosed bar area, and the open seating area, guests can choose their setting based on their mood or the time of day. The transparent glass enclosure ensures visual continuity, allowing the ceiling's organic pattern to flow seamlessly through all sections.

Creating the Sky Lounge was not without its challenges. The rooftop location imposed certain restrictions, such as the placement of the kitchen and the need to work around existing services. The design team had to find creative ways to break the linear feel of the space without compromising its quality. The installation of the paper tube ceiling was also a complex process, requiring careful planning, coding, and numbering of each tube.

Despite these challenges, the Sky Lounge was completed in just two months, from August to October 2021. The project involved not only experienced designers but also architecture students, who had the opportunity to learn about the construction of parametric design on-site. The result is a restaurant that is not only a place to eat but also a living example of sustainable design and architectural innovation.

The Sky Lounge's unique design and commitment to sustainability have not gone unnoticed. In 2022, it was awarded the Silver A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award, a prestigious recognition for top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs. This award is a testament to Ketan Jawdekar's innovative vision and the potential of sustainable design in transforming spaces and experiences.
